Geopsychiatry in clinical practice-geopolitical determinants of mental health

There is a growing global awareness that conflict, populism, the erosion of human rights, climate change, inequalities, terror, and fragile security add to the global health burden and present the most fundamental global mental health challenges. In the next few decades there will be a greater urgency for psychiatry to respond to these multi-dimensional challenges and we need to take heed and pay greater attention to the structural issues that create them.
Geopolitical determinants are increasingly being recognized as important contributors to population mental ill-health. These determinants include political, commercial, and geographical factors along with cultural, economic, and physical determinants. Often geographical factors and commercial or political factors have been studied in silos. Geopsychiatry proposal is to link these together as these factors influence each other in multiple complex ways.

This presentation aims to offer a brief overview of geopolitical determinants of mental health and how these observations can be used in the context of social justice and equity in clinical practice.
