In the Philippines, social and community psychiatry (SCP) has long been viewed as a subspecialty. This perspective has limited the development of necessary competencies among graduates of general psychiatry residency programs. A review of how SCP was understood and taught in different psychiatry residency training institutions identified gaps and needs in integrating it in the general psychiatry curriculum. Situated in the local context, a curriculum is proposed to standardize teaching SCP in the country to achieve identified learning outcomes.
